Description

Naim’s original Nait XS was introduced in 2008. It was designed as a step up from the basic Nait integrated amp and offered improved sound and greater grunt from a similarly slimline package.

A decade on it was revised for a second time by Naim’s engineers, and the result is the XS 3 we have on test here. Looks familiar, doesn’t it? That revision turns out to be light, with the previously line-level amplifier gaining a moving-magnet phono stage and undergoing a tweak in the power amp circuitry to improve its responsiveness.

Features

It’s somewhat of a surprise to find that digital inputs and Bluetooth aren’t on the menu. Naim would argue that an outboard DAC would be a better solution, and at least that way the analogue performance doesn’t suffer and the price doesn’t change too much.

The new phono circuit is made up of three stages – a gain stage, passive equalisation and final gain and active equalisation. The idea is to minimise noise while delivering plenty of dynamic headroom.

The equalisation curve chosen is custom, treading the path between traditional RIAA and the IEC alternative. The aim is to deliver a good bass performance combined with enough low-end roll-off to avoid rumble spoiling the sound.

Take a look inside that crisp but solid casework and you’ll find immaculately assembled audio circuitry fed by a generous power-supply section. Great care has been taken in reducing the degrading effect of outside interference and unwanted interactions between components.

We’re impressed by the attention to detail here. It drills right the way down to the shaping of connecting wiring and the exact number and placement of the tie clips used to hold it in place. Yes, it’s true that someone at Naim does indeed sit down and listen to the difference these things make.

Sound

The commitment to getting things right is obvious when we listen to the product. We’ve always liked the Nait XS and there’s nothing we hear in this third-generation model that changes our mind.

Compared with the last generation, and thanks to those tweaks in the power-amp circuitry, the ’3 sounds a little crisper and more agile. The differences aren’t massive, and certainly not of the order that we would suggest that an owner of a previous generation upgrade to this one. But, they’re enough to keep Naim at the cutting edge of performance at this price.

Seeing that the moving-magnet phono stage is the big news here it seems the right place to start. We fit a Goldring 1042 MM cartridge to our reference Technic SL-1000R and enjoy the likes of Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen and Beethoven over the next few hours.

It’s pretty common to find that built-in phono stages aren’t particularly good. They tend to be included as a box-ticking exercise with little regard to getting the best performance. The circuit in the XS 3 bucks that trend with a detailed and punchy performance that brims with energy and interest. It’s relatively quiet too.

We move to the line inputs and the Nait continues to impress with a combination of insight, dynamic subtlety and rhythmic drive that’s hard to better at this level. Pricier rivals such as Roksan’s Blak offer more in the way of outright authority and bass grunt, delivering a sense of scale and an expansive stereo image that the Naim can’t match, but it’s not just one-way traffic.

The Nait sounds more energetic and entertaining. It takes the multitude of musical strands in Arvo Part’s Tabula Rasa and combines them to deliver a musical and emotionally absorbing performance. Detail resolution is good, but it’s the amplifier’s ability to assemble all that information into a cohesive whole that really impresses.

There’s a generous dose of dynamics, the Naim tracking the slow-build of the music well. The result is composed too, with a good degree of refinement when required. 

We switch to Neneh Cherry’s Blank Project and love the way this amp tracks the album’s complex rhythms. There’s a proper sense of momentum to Spit Three Times and plenty of punch when the music demands. Yet, alongside the bombast there’s also finesse. Cherry’s voice is nicely focussed and comes with nuance and passion.  

The story is equally positive though the front-panel 6.3mm headphone output. We try a range of headphones from the Beyerdynamic T1 to the Grado SR325e without issue. This output retains the enthusiasm and insight we hear through the speaker outputs, and that’s not always a given.

Verdict

The Nait XS 3 is a fit-and-forget product in the best sense. It slots into your system and does exactly what you want it to, and that’s deliver the music with emotional impact intact. We can’t ask any more of an amplifier than that.

VTF-2 mk5 Introduction:

It’s not easy being a middle childVTF2 facing left.jpg. The older sibling gets all the glory, and the younger sibling gets all the affection, but the middle child has to struggle just to get noticed. The same can be true of product lines from almost any manufacturer.

The entry-level product is the most accessible since it is the most affordable, the top-of-the-line product provokes the most excitement since it is usually the most powerful and/or most feature-packed, but the middle product often just elicits a shrug.

Hsu has recently updated the middle child of their VTF subwoofers, the VTF-2, to its fifth iteration, the mk5. In this review, we will determine whether the VTF-2 mk5 is a standout child or simply a middle rung in the ladder of Hsu’s VTF subwoofers.

The VTF-2 has been a part of Hsu Research’s VTF subwoofer line for 17 years and has developed considerably in that time through a number of iterations.

The ‘VTF’ stands for ‘Variable Tuning Frequency’ and is Hsu’s line of ported subwoofers that use multiple ports that adjust the tuning point to the user’s preference. The first VTF-2 used a down-firing 10” driver and a 150-watt regular Class AB amplifier in a 2.9 cubic foot cabinet. Through every version, it has steadily grown and improved, and the newest VTF-2 sports a front-firing 12” driver, a 350 watt BASH amplifier, and 3.9 cubic foot enclosure.

Happily, one aspect about the VTF-2 which has not substantially increased over the years is the price: the original sold for $499 whereas the mk5 sells for $539, and this is likely due to a combination of Hsu Research’s maturation as a manufacturer and also the lowering of cost of technology manufacturing in that time.

Unpacking and Set Up:

The VTF-2 mk5 arrives in a large but not unmanageable box emblazoned with the Hsu logo. Like all Hsu subwoofers that are shipped in the continental USA, there is a demo CD in the packing envelope featuring a handful of orchestral tracks and a variety of test tones.

 The box is sealed with both heavy-duty staples and packing tape, and opening it reveals a thick foam top piece that looks very adequate for the task of protecting the subwoofer during rugged shipping. The VTF-2 is sandwiched by these large foam pieces, and a plastic bag covers the subwoofer to protect it from moisture. 

Altogether the packing is very practical and effective, and it would take particularly brutal shipment to damage this subwoofer.

The owner’s guide, which is also available on the company website product page, is appropriately accessible for novice subwoofer owners and contains good advice for fine-tuning and placement even for more experienced subwoofer owners. It’s more than a perfunctory guide and is a worthwhile read for new owners. 

Appearance:

At 20.5” high and 22” deep, the VTF-2 mk5 is probably not many people’s idea of a small subwoofer. That is not to say it is gigantic but perhaps on the large side. It has a rugged vinyl black finish that is not quite as fine as the satin black on Hsu’s higher end subwoofers, but it does present a clean appearance and would not be as easily scratched.

The VTF-2 mk5 will not dazzle anyone with beauty, but, with its rounded edges, it has a clean simplicity that would be innocuous in a room’s corner. It is a perfect height and shape to serve as an end table for those who want some near-field punch and can accommodate that kind of placement. With grille on, it is simple and smooth black box, but with grille off, a gleaming cone and two sleek ports exudes a readiness to rock. I prefer the VTF-2 mk5 with the grille off!

Design Overview:

It is difficult to pin down the foremost feature of the VTF-2 mk5 since it is an evenly balanced design. To begin discussion of its design, we will start with the feature that most distinguishes it from many competing subs, namely the dual-port variable tuning.

Hsu’s variable tuning subwoofers have been around for years now, and for those not acquainted with the idea, here’s a brief explanation. The function of ports on speakers and subwoofers is to produce sound more efficiently in low frequencies than the drivers are able to.

They do this by using the backward motion of the woofer into the cabinet to resonate the air mass within the port. The port’s length and width affect the frequencies at which the port generates sound; the longer a port is with respect to its width, the deeper frequencies it will produce. However, the wider a port is, the more output it will generate at its resonant frequency.

Placing multiple ports in a speaker or subwoofer will act like one port that has the width of all the ports combined. In systems such as Hsu’s VTF subwoofers, the user can exchange output headroom at higher frequencies for lower frequency output by plugging one of its ports, thereby increasing the length of the ports with respect to their collective width. This enables the subwoofer to play deeper frequencies far more effectively but at the cost of output potential at some frequencies above that point. 

                                  

The VTF-2 mk5’s variable tuning system allows the user to have either bass extension down to 18 Hz or more output at 25 Hz and above. The exact amount of trade-off of deep bass extension vs. efficiency at higher bass frequencies can be seen in our measurements and analysis page.

The user can also seal both ports, which substantially reduces deep bass output. This can be handy in small rooms that can boost deep bass to excessive levels. Simply plugging or unplugging a port is not all there is to the VTF system.

A control switch on the amplifier plate changes the frequency of a low frequency filter since the driver needs to be protected below the tuning frequency of any ported system. Below the port tuning frequency, there is not enough resistance from internal air pressure on the back of the woofer to stop the driver from flying too freely and easily bottoming out which can potentially damage it.

When both ports are open, the filter switch labeled ‘operating mode’ should always be set to ‘EQ 2’, but any other combination of operating mode settings and port closures will be safe configurations to use

For the VTF-2 mk5, Hsu has upgraded the BASH amplifier to a 350-watt unit, up from the 250-watt amp of the mk4. The BASH (Bridged Amplifier Switching Hybrid) amplifier technology combines the sound quality of AB amplifier topologies with the high efficiency of Class D amplifiers.

Among the features of the VTF-2’s amplifier, a Q control is used to manipulate the slope of the low-end rolloff. Speaker-level inputs allow the subwoofer to be used with systems that do not have an LFE output or a line-level output.

An adjustable low-pass filter ranging from 90 Hz to 30 Hz gives users control over the subwoofer’s bandwidth for setups that lack bass management. A voltage input switch makes the subwoofer useable in countries with different electrical standards.

The cabinet is constructed from ¾” thick MDF all around except for the front baffle, which is a bit thicker. There is a piece of bracing midway in the cabinet that supports the ports. The feet are firm rubber rings that may help damp any mechanical vibrations from the enclosure to the floor.

The grille guides use metal prongs instead of cheap plastic tabs, so the grille should not break easily. The cabinet is generously lined with polyfill that helps damp enclosure resonance. Two 3” flared ports protrude far back into the cabinet.

Overall, the enclosure is a simple and sturdy design. More bracing might be welcome, but the thick paneling should compensate for that to an extent. I never felt any sidewall vibration or detected panel resonance in my time with the VTF-2 mk5.

One note about the port and included port plugs is it can be a nuisance to remove the plugs if they are pushed in too far; make sure there is an edge of the port plug available from which to grab them to pull them out. They do not have to be shoved in very far to create an air-tight seal.

HSU VTF-2 mk5 Driver:

Examining the driver, the first thing that jumps out about it is the beefy magnet in the motor; a stack of two ¾” iron pieces with a 6.25” diameter which form the bulk of the 16 lbs. weight of the driver. The basket is made from stamped steel of a decent thickness with a rib on the spokes for additional rigidity. A butyl foam surround holds a treated paper cone that meets a nomex spider at what appears to be a 2” diameter former.

A bumped-out back plate has a pole vent for thermal management. The VTF-2 mk5 driver uses shorting rings to reduce flux modulation. Altogether, this driver looks to wisely allocate the bulk of the cost to the motor.

SVS Pb 3000 pro review Series Subwoofers Introduction:

Last fall, SVS released the 3000 series subwoofers which was said to bridge the performance and price gap between their 2000 and 4000 subwoofer lines. This role had formerly been filled by the ‘12-Plus’ line before they were discontinued. SVS’s naming system of using numerations of one thousand helped simplify redesigned models of previous names, so the redesign of the ‘13-Ultra’ series became the 4000 series, and the ‘12-NSD’ series became the 2000 series.

Those were redesigns that kept the same basic construction, so much of the cabinet design and driver design remained the same, which is not a bad thing since they had been proven to work very well. The 3000 series, on the other hand, is quite different and does not bear resemblance to the ‘12-Plus’ series that it takes over in SVS’s price/performance ladder.

It is a totally different design that uses an entirely different driver, cabinet, and amplifier. A couple of aspects remain the same, such as the use of variable port tuning and the 800 watt RMS power rating of the amp, but it really is an entirely different subwoofer.(click here to feel SVS PB 3000 pro)

    

3000 pair promotional.jpgThe 3000 subs do keep the same price point as the 12-Plus models. One trade-off that SVS has decided to make is to use higher-performing parts at the expense of the higher-end finish and build of the ‘12-Plus’ subs.

The PB12-Plus had a much heavier and thicker cabinet which could also have a gloss black finish. The PB-3000 has foregone these amenities in pursuit of higher performance; a car analogy might be that the PB-3000 is less of a luxury car and more of a sports car. The sealed SB-3000 can still be had in gloss black, but doubtlessly, it is a lot less expensive to have such a nice finish on a small sub as opposed to a large ported sub.

In for review today, we have the PB-3000 and SB-3000 subwoofers. Having dealt with both the 2000 and 4000 series subs, we will look at how well the 3000s bridge the gap between those two lines. The price range that these subs occupy, $1,000 to $1,400, is fiercely competitive in the subwoofer market, so SVS was probably right to bring out a whole new design rather than redo the 12-Plus line. Given the competition, they would not have entered products in this price range lightly,

The 3000 subs arrived in heavy-duty cardboard boxes. There are instructions on the outside that guide the unpacking process, and if these instructions are followed, it does make the unpacking process much easier and simpler. Both subs were packed with heavy-duty polyethylene foam blocks sandwiching the top and bottom.

                         

This does protect them against shock and hard knocks, and, in fact, the box for the SB-3000 that I received showed evidence of having endured some kind of significant impact yet the sub was in perfect condition. The subs were also wrapped in a plastic bag to protect from moisture, and a soft cotton bag underneath that to protect them from scuffs during unpacking.

As usual, SVS’s packing is top-notch, which is not surprising from a company with so much experience having shipped many thousands of subwoofers all over the world. 

Appearance:

The appearances of the PB-3000 and SB-3000 are two very different stories. Even though they use the same driver, the PB-3000 is large and muscular looking, while the SB-3000 is much more elegant and refined. While this is mostly due to the fact that the PB-3000 is over twice as large as the PB3000 2.jpgSB-3000,  another major contributing factor to this effect is that the SB-3000 came in a Piano Gloss Black finish whereas the PB-3000 comes in a Black Ash finish.

The PB-3000 only comes in Black Ash. The SB-3000 can be had in Black Ash but can be had in Piano Gloss Black for a $100 surcharge. SVS’s gloss black finish is a deep high-gloss that is quite nice and not plasticy, so it is well worth the premium cost in my opinion. 

I have always liked the look of SVS’s woofers, and they keep a consistent style throughout their product lines. They always have a soft black texture with the SVS logo printed on the dustcap. I don’t normally like it when any kind of graphic is printed on cones, but SVS gets a pass here since it has always been somewhat understated and tasteful.

One new stylistic touch that is not as welcome is the SVS logo is impressed in the gasket piece around the surround at the top and bottom. With ‘SVS’ printed on the dustcap in large font, we do not need the additional reminders that this is an SVS product. I think less is more in terms of logo placement.

The ports on the front of the PB-3000 do add to the brawny look especially with the grille on. SVS’s grilles have always been far more about function than form and that remains true for the 3000 subs. SB3000 c.jpgThe grilles certainly can be useful, but these subs look better without them, especially the SB-3000.

The SB-3000 almost achieves a certain clean perfection. I say almost, because it doesn’t quite achieve perfection on account of the grille guides on the front baffle which do mar an otherwise smooth design. Nonetheless, it is one of the nicest-looking subwoofers I have dealt with to date. It is a gleaming beauty that would not look out of place in luxury spaces (sans grille). My advice to SVS - move to a magnetic grille for the SB-3000. Yes, small magnets would not support as robust grille as the existing one, but think about how much more graceful it would be without the grille guides!

I would sum up these subs’ appearances by using an automotive comparison: the PB-3000 resembles a beefy SUV whereas the SB-3000 resembles a luxury sedan. This seems a fitting analogy not just in aesthetics but also of performance.

Design Overview:

At Audioholics, we often 3000 pair10.jpgsee the question from audio novices of what the difference is between a ported sub and a sealed sub, aside from the obvious size difference. The answer is simple: ported subs tend to have a lot more deep bass output than sealed subs

For those who don’t know, ported subwoofers use the back motion of the rear side of the woofer into the cabinet to resonate the air mass within the port. The air mass inside the port vibrates at precise frequencies from an effect called ‘Helmholtz Resonance.’ This is the same acoustic principle at work when you blow over the top of a bottle or jug and a distinct note is produced.

The volume of air inside the cabinet and volume of air inside the ports are critical ingredients to this and govern the sound produced by the port, much like the volume of air inside of a jug and the shape of the opening determines the sound when blown upon. In a sealed subwoofer, the pressure waves created by the motion of the rear side of the cone are simply lost, and, in terms of sound produced per watt, a sealed subwoofer is far less efficient in deep bass ranges.

This difference in deep bass capability will certainly carry between the SB-3000 and PB-3000. The catch is that ported subs need to be substantially larger than sealed to take full advantage of this principle when using the same driver and amplifier.

Going back to our analogy of the SB-3000 as a sedan and the PB-3000 as a truck, it is more than just an aesthetic comparison because the PB-3000 can displace a lot more air which means much higher sound pressure levels at low frequencies, so, like the vehicle differences, it has a lot more ‘hauling capacity.‘

 One thing to keep in mind is that the output advantages that a ported sub has over a sealed sub are mostly limited to deep bass. Above port resonant frequencies, which is a relatively narrow frequency band, ported subwoofers do not have as much output advantage. We will be able to take a close look at the performance differences in the ‘Measurements and Analysis’ section of this review.
