Angelina Jolie to play opera singer Maria Callas in 'Maria'

A biographical film called "Maria" will be made about Maria Callas. The role of the legendary opera singer will be performed by Angelina Jolie.

Deadline writes that the biopic "Maria" will tell about the last days of the life of Maria Callas. The action will unfold in France in the 1970s:

"The film, based on a true story, tells the turbulent, beautiful, and tragic story of the greatest opera singer as she lived through the last days of her life in Paris in the 1970s."

Maria Callas spent the last years of her life in Paris. The singer practically did not leave the apartment, where she died in 1977. Kallas died at the age of 53.

The director of the film "Maria" will be Pablo Larrain. He has previously made films about the lives of famous women. Larrain directed the drama, Spencer, with Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana and Jackie with Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Kennedy. In addition, Pablo Larrain worked on the series "Lisey's Story" by Stephen King and the films "No" in 2012 and "Ema: Dance of Passion". Larrain commented on his new project as follows:

“My longtime dream has come true to combine my two deepest passions, film and opera. And to do so with Angelina, an incredibly brave and inquisitive artist, is an exciting opportunity. A real gift."

Angelina Jolie, in turn, said that she is serious about the task of correctly conveying the story of Maria Callas. The actress also admitted that she has long admired the work of Pablo Larrain.

Biopic Mary was written by Steven Knight. He worked on the same "Spencer", and also on the series "Peaky Blinders".
